Joe Pons
Joe Pons was born in New Orleans, LA and moved to Lafayette, LA in 1974. After graduating from USL(now UL Lafayette), he taught high school in Chalmette, LA for 2 years. Between 1966 and 1974, Ford Motor Co. and Customer Relations Division employed him as a Field Service Engineer and Technical Manager.

Joe attempts to share nature as he experiences it and convey that special feeling. His goal is to capture the essence and mood of nature, including animals, butterflies, birds, scenes, flowers, and North American landscapes. He has used both color and black and white film in both 35mm and medium format. Most currently his work is digital.

Joe's animal and wildflower photos are shot in thier natural habitat. If "hybridized" flowers, animal "models", or zoo animals are used, they are duly and clearly noted.

For most of his 67 years, Joe has been interested in travel, the outdoors, wildlife, nature, and photography. For the past 22 years he has combined these interests and has sharpened his photographic, esthetic, and technical skills to produce many successful images.

In December of 1999, Joe retired as a UL Professor of Industrial Technology. Pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical systems applications was his main teaching focus. Retirement allows him to pursue photography professionally. He now has the time to devote to photographic endeavors, which in the past, were nothing more than a dream.

Current photographic passions/interests include:
  • All wildlife, especially birds, alligators, and flying insects.
  • Wildflowers and flowers, including ultra macro
  • Scenic swamps, deserts, beaches, and mountainns
  • Exploiting grain and texture and more abstract subject rendering
  • Using Photoshop as an artistic, photographic tool
Joe's work has been displayed at the Lafayette Art Association, Lafayette Consolidated Government Building, Heymann Performing Arts Center, Vermilionville, Studio One 2 One, Crowley Art Association, Iberia Sugarcane Festival, Apple Valley Gallery in Gatlinburg, TN, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort (Olympic National Park, WA). His photos have been published in Weekend Escapes, a quarterly regional travel magazine, The Louisiana Review, and The History Channel Magazine.
